This strainer is a perfect replacement (or spare) for the spring-clip type strainers that come with sinks that have a recessed rectangular slot in the drain. This strainer is an improvement over the original strainer. The original (OEM) strainer has a spring clip that compresses as you push the strainer down into the rectangular slot. This Danco is solid state. To close the drain, you rotate the strainer until it falls into the slot. To open the drain, you lift and rotate the strainer a little.

This strainer is a perfect fit, both in open and closed drain positions. It allows you to always have a strainer in place, rather that having to tip a "universal" strainer sideways in order to let water flow through.
