Eva-Dry Edv-2200 Mid-Size Dehumidifier (Health and Beauty) I spent a lot of time researching the available options to dehumidify my new apartment, which apparently has excellent thermal insulation (it's 90 degs outside but stays at 78-80 inside without a/c) but major humidity problems, partly as a result of the a/c never kicking on. Forcing the a/c to run wasn't worth catching cold and/or freezing to death, so my first low-budget solution was DampRid. It helped, especially in the closets (i.e. small enclosed areas), but it wasn't enough to take the moisture out of the air in the bedroom and living areas. So after looking at dozens of reviews for the Bionaire BDQ24-UC and the Soleus CFM-25E, I decided to go with this model, the EDV-2200.Rationale against conventional dehumidifier: didn't want to spend $150-200 for a heavy mechanically complicated object that may get damaged in transit, with no recourse except to bicker with Bionaire/Soleus/Amazon service reps, that may or may not arrive as a lemon (per some of the reviews), and deal with a 2-foot tall 40 pound object which is likely going to be loud and suck up significant electricity.I'm a pessimist, and that was what I took from the reviews. The majority seemed happy with their purchases, but a few had horror stories. I have terrible luck, and I got the feeling that I too would end up griping in a review about how awful my purchase was. If I was the type to not care about dropping a couple benjamins on a device that may or may not work, then no problem, I'd go with the Bionaire or the Soleus. But frankly, I got student loans and I'm poor, so I do care about where my money goes and the EDV-2200 seemed like a good alternative.Why I like it:- It's quiet. I have no clue as to how Peltier technology works, but all I hear is the fan, and there are minimal moving mechanical parts (no compressor, no refrigerant system, no oil leaking, nothing clanking or squeaking).- It doesn't suck up much electricity. I don't remember exactly, but I think it runs at 70watt-ish.- It's small. And rather cute. It looks like a one-foot tall egg.- It works. Sort of. I see about 240-480 mL in the collection chamber every 24 hours. It still feels a bit humid around here, but hey, 1-2 cups in the tank means 1-2 cups less water in the air.- I move it around from room to room every 24h, and where ever it is it seems to help somewhat. I wasn't expecting this thing to run like a champ and cover 900 square feet like

The thickness adjustment plate is made of aluminum and the guide rods appear to be stainless steel. The shell that holds the drive train is also cast aluminum. The food carriage is ABS plastic with a stainless steel top. The glide rails are made of a low friction plastic. The blade is stainless steel and very sharp. Operation is smooth and the fit and finish leave nothing to be desired.I included some pictures of the drive train up top under customer images. The motor is a husky high RPM DC type with a metal worm gear that drives a plastic copolymer spur gear that finally drives a large ring gear attached to the blade. Lubrication on the worm gear in my unit was a bit light so I applied some old teletype grease I've been using for years - and years - and more years. The back plate is an aluminum casting that holds all the parts securely. Wire routing is superb. The drive train cover holds a cowl that fits over the motor and directs the air from the fan over the windings. The unit has a very precise look - like something that might be made in Germany though it's not.The brushes are carbon/copper composite and the commutator is about an inch in diameter with many segments. The bearings appear to be phosbronze rather than ball bearings but the side thrust is minimal due to the worm gear drive so sleeve bearings are fine here. I have nothing but good things to say about the way the drive train is designed or the materials used. Top shelf all the way.Some reviewers (I suspect they're mostly grumpy old men who think a 56 Chevy was the last good car ever to hit the showroom floor) criticize the use of plastic gears. I disagree. Plastic gears have been used successfully for thirty years now and for small appliances like this they are much better than metal gears. They have a slicker surface so they glide better. They are strong. They are quiet. However, the slicer has no safety clutch and the high gearing means that the motor can apply tremendous torque to the toothed gears that drive the blade. People who break the teeth are probably jamming materials into the blade too fast. The blade turns at approximately 20 inches per second under no load and the feed rate on dense and frozen food should be no more than 2 inches per second. However, there are a few costs you should be aware of before you purchase a Bunn Coffee Maker. I'm not saying that it may not be worth it to you, but you may as well know all of the costs before purchasing.They both have to do with how Bunn delivers such a fast pot - 3 minutes as opposed to 4-8 minutes of other makers. The first way they do it is to have what amounts to two sets of water tanks: one you fill, and the other is preheated. The preheated water tank is delivered to the spray head, and because it is preheated, it doesn't require any time to heat it up. The problem is that it is preheated 24/7, and that can be costly. I'm guessing they use a 40 watt heater. If it takes 8-12 cents per day in energy costs, you are looking at $20-$40 per year. You can, after you are done brewing for the day, shut off the "vacation switch" which is the switch to the tank heater, and this will save the cost and energy, but if you forget to turn it back on at least 15 minutes ahead of when you need it, you are looking at a 15 minute wait for the tank to reheat before you can brew. You can also use a timer to limit the time of day the unit stays preheated, but that's an additional cost and timers use energy to run all day.Furthermore, if you are having guests, if you brew a pot of caffinated, followed by a pot of decaf, you may need to wait 15 minutes between pots. The Bunn commercial brewers keep three preheated tanks, so this isn't a problem for them. But the consumer models keep only one tank preheated.Note that they work on gravity: the water you put in pushes the preheated water out. Some of the preheated water will evaporate, so you have to put in more water than you want out.The second thing they do to get a fast brew is to increase the amount of water that pours in to the filter basket, far greater than other coffee makers. The amount of water would collapse other filters, but because these filters are taller and sturdier, they stand up.
