The knives have 4-inch blades cleverly angled to prevent wrist strain while applying maximum pressure. The edges are serrated so they do tend to tear meat fibers rather than slicing cleanly through them as straight-edge steak knives do. Stamped from high-carbon stainless steel, the knives have 18/10 stainless-steel handles and are dishwasher-safe. The storage box is heirloom quality, with a glowing, deep-auburn mahogany finish. Knives rest in wood slots at an angle that makes them easy to retrieve. The box measures 15 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 1-3/4 inches deep and has brass clasps. I like nice things and am a bit of a snob. That being said, these knives are not "top of the line" Henckels. But they don't cost the same either. More importantly, they are not the cheap Henckels line. They cut well, rather than tearing. They look nice and go with stainless flatwear. The one consistent comment made by others I find interesting is how well they survive the dishwasher. These knives are not supposed to go in the dishwasher. They are to be hand washed. The instructions so state. There is no way to sharpen them because they are serrated. So a dishwasher will dull them without recourse. But no good knives are supposed to be put in a dishwasher. This is a nice set and I am pleased I bought them.
