(What's this?) My kids are always bugging me to play with my iPhone and iPad. They are not allowed to touch the iPad, but I sometimes relent and let them play a game on the phone for a few minutes. I figured this would be a good substitute, and I was right to some extent. The kids had a blast playing around with it, but would I spend my own money on such a device? The verdict so far is no.
Please bear in mind - I do not expect this to replace a $500 iPad. But, consider that the InnoTab costs $80 and does not use rechargeable batteries. So spend another $18 for rechargeable batteries and $10 for an AC adapter to charge it. Now buy 1 game cartridge for $25. Now you're up to $133. One more game and a couple of $3 apps and you've spent more than $150. You can get a used iPod touch or new Android tablet for that. For $199, you can get a Kindle Fire which comes with rechargeable batteries, power adapter, and has free/inexpensive games.
So to get my vote, the InnoTab would need to have great games or have a good ecosystem of software geared towards education.
To start, it is an attractive unit with a bright screen. It uses 4 AA batteries, a disappointment as I would have hoped it would be rechargeable. There is a spot to plug it in, but since the unit comes with no AC adapter, I would have to go buy one separately to use it. Viewing angles on the screen are quite respectable for a toy, and the sound is quite clear and crisp. I have not tried a drop-test, but the plastic case and rubberized corners make it feel pretty invincible. While there is no on-board user storage (it requires an SD card), at least the SD card is somewhat hidden inside the battery compartment, so kids are less likely to break it.
The back of the unit has the battery/SD compartment (but no screws to hold it closed unfortunately, which can be a problem for small kids). There is also a nice kickstand to hold the unit upright. There is also a built-in stylus that stays firmly attached so you won't lose it.
Along the edges you will find a headphone jack, DC input (but no adapter included), USB jack with rubber plug on it, slider switch to lock the screen, and a slot for optional game cartridges.
The front of the unit has a power switch, volume up, volume down, brightness, home key, and help key.
The unit boots fairly fast and has immediate visual appeal for a kid. You can create user account so the parent can monitor the kid's "learning", but I found that rather useless. Included with the devices are an e-reader with 1 book, some coloring programs, a calendar, note application, friends, and calculator. There are 2 games - one where you slide blocks to let a penguin go past and 1 accelerometer based marble game where you spell words. My son liked the marble game the best.
Without buying any extras, you can use the PC application to load photos, music, and videos onto the device. Without spending an extra dime, it's a nice MP3 player, video player, and even photo album.
I looked at cartridges in the store - $25 for a game is ridiculous, so I did not buy any. You get 3 v-coins that let you buy 3 things online (games or e-books), so I got those. I did not want to pay $3 each for any more after seeing the value of what I got.
The apps have sparse descriptions. No user reviews are provided, just stars. The best was an interactive Globe, but the globe didn't even label every country. What did Costa Rica, Paraguay, Morocco, Israel, or Latvia do wrong to warrant being left off the map? Venezuela is in the news a lot, but you wouldn't be able to find it on this app. For US users, a map with US states would have been nice, but the map just indicates the US as 1 site. There are 4 buttons with 1 fact each for the limited selection of country.
I also wanted a math game, but there was little indication what each one did or taught. I got math aliens which did single digit addition (I could find no app for multiplication tables), and also checkout stand, where kids have to count out money. That one would be good except it features $1 coins, something my kids never see.
Do I recommend you buy this? I think there's better out there. I've heard good things about the Leapfrog devices, and honestly for a bit more you can get a used iPod Touch for your kids with almost limitless free games. V-Tech is kidding themselves if they think $25 for a game makes sense in a world of $5 and less apps. The inexpensive apps they offer are a joke.
In short, the device has no glaring defects warranting a 2 star or lower, but I certainly would not buy it myself, hence the 3 star review.
Update:
One other note - the folks at V-Tech have dirty minds. You can't write a list of numbers from 1-100 without it sounding a beep about 2/3 through. You also can't write any normal words that are euphemisms for inappropriate things, even if the word itself is normal. All this does is make the kids wonder why some numbers and words are dirty and make them ask more. Ridiculous! Definitely do not recommend a toy that can actually TEACH your kid dirty words!
