I had been reading reviews about 32 inch LCD Smart HDTVs for a couple of months and then I found this JVC TV being offered for $289 as a 24hr weekend special on another site (N**E*g). This was about a month ago and at that time there were only a few reviews that I could find, a couple here at Amazon and several at W**mart. As mentioned by another reviewer here I read that JVC had contracted with a reputable and well known panel manufacturer to build these sets. So on a whim I decided to purchase it and I am more than satisfied. My typical viewing distance is 5-12ft and at this distance the picture looks great. Sound quality is satisfactory. I had fully expected to upgrade my SD cable box to one that was HD, but so far the 480i SD picture is very acceptable to me. I'm particulary pleased with the 480i picture when viewing football, golf, or other sports. Another reviewer indicated that the picture was just "not right" regardless of how the settings were tweaked, but I'm running the out of the box settings associated with "standard mode" and am pleased. The onscreen menu allows the user to select from the following preset picture modes which are standard, movie, game, vivid, and sport.
I have also connected my PC via HDMI and this screen makes for a crisp 1080P PC monitor, and youtube video @ 1080p looks excellent. I don't do any gaming through the PC so I can't comment on any lag issues.
I've tested the USB port to make sure it worked and it displayed jpeg photos fine. I've recently purchased an internet capable blu-ray player so now I've got an internet capable "smart TV" for less than the cost of most 32inch sets that come internet ready. If you want an inexpensive TV that has a great picture for under $300 I think you will be satisfied. Wait for a sale and pick one up.
