This review is from: Scrabble Platinum Edition with Rotating Board (Toy)
Scrabble is, of course, the best board game ever invented. This review is not about the game in general but rather about the platinum set in particular. At first glance, it's very attractive - all bright and shiny. It appears reasonably well-made. It's similar in design, of course, to the onyx edition which preceded it. Overall, I would rate the construction slightly better than the onyx edition. The board edges and tiles are plastic in the platinum edition while they were wooden in the onyx edition.
Other than the price, I have 2 major criticisms of this edition. First, they have changed the colors of the double & triple word and letter squares. If you've never played Scrabble, you probably won't care. If you're a regular player, however, you may find the new color scheme very annoying. I hate this change and see absolutely no reason for it. That alone knocks at least one star from the rating.
My other criticism is that the plastic tiles don't stay within the squares very well. If you're comparing this set to the basic cardboard set where there's nothing to hold the tiles in place, you will absolutely love this set. The board does have a grid to keep the tiles from going everywhere, and the revolving board is a must for any serious player. However, this set compares poorly to the deluxe sets made in the 70s where the board was covered in a plastic grid which did a great job of keeping the wooden tiles in place.
Bottom line: the platinum set is pretty, although pricey. It's a big improvement over the basic set, but the color change may be a dealbreaker. The serious player will do better to find a vintage, used set at auction. For the casual player more interested in style over substance, this is a nice set.
